FMP individual proposal tutorial with Phil.

Not much has changed since the previous weeks group tutorial, but I've been researching and planning more for my proposed briefs. I have considered them more in terms of audience and why I'm doing each one which I hadn't before.

We went over each brief again and discussed a few more things to consider but overall I came away feeling confident that I have a strong set of briefs and a well rounded FMP proposal.

These are the notes I took during the tutorial which I've expanded on a bit.

Brief 1 - OTTO brand building

- the invites - why do you want to invite them? // what are you going to give them? // how are they going to come back to you?

How are you going to create Brand loyalty

Phil suggested that Marty and I go away and consider how to keep the people we invite interested and make them want to come to the next event. This could be in the form of a give away print for example which advertises the up coming collection or that there will be a new event later in the year.

Discussing a few of the other briefs it came to light that I can actually utilise this event as a method of distribution for briefs like Thierry Sewell's branding and networking material. If we invite him to come and document the event he would be able to use printed collateral that I've designed for him. Similarly it could be use or my SO HOMME branding brief. I would be inviting Shaun and Thierry anyway, this would give me a justified reason.

Brief 2 - SO HOMME

- get deliverables pinned down

With this brief I need to give my self a strict target for the deliverables. The basic and standard collateral will be the easy part to produce but the experimental intention will be the creative challenge.

Brief 3 - Brand Theory

- brief has been reconsidered and is now focussed on branding the 4 pillars of branding
- research will still consist of a multitude of brand theories and practices and contextual research will look at brands that are putting the 4 pillars into action.

Brief 4 - Thierry Sewell

Not much to comment on this brief, just needs more research and planning. Ideas for designs and networking deliverables will help define the direction of this brief.

Brief 5 - Found & Bound

This brief is fairly straight forward and will also be delivered as my competition brief. I'll be submitting it to RSA as a response to the Change Makers brief. This will help give the brief structure and define the audience. The brief will be continued beyond the competition deadline.

If I was to define my FMP at this point, it would be a focussed practice of branding and identity within fashion and retail. Each brief is approaching different aspects of branding and identity.

BRIEF 1 - Meeting with Jenny & Gina

Marty has arranged a meeting with Jenny Crothers and Gina Martin who are helping us set up the launch party. We're going to keep in touch with them through regular meetings in college.

Things to cover:

- date of the event - time

- what we want /needs for the event
   - posters
   - event should be about the brand
   - networking
   - features?

- what do Jenny and Gina need from this event?

- who else will be there/who else will be involved or a part of the event

- promotion - will we be designing the flyers and posters etc?

- if yes what has to be advertised?
   - outlaws logo
   - our own logo
   - date
   - address of venue
   - about the event (need to know is a fashion event)

- what will go on during the event?

Marty and I met with Jen and Gina and went over the list of things to cover. The most important item at this stage in the brief is the time and date of the event. Once we have this confirmed, Marty and I can then begin designing the invites and promotional material.

The girls didn't have a confirmed date for us however we discussed the best time for the event and decided on the last week before the easter (March 18th-22nd) as we'd all still be in Leeds and it gives us a bench mark to get all the work done.

The time of the event will be 7pm-11pm as Outlaws license doesn't permit them to serve after 11pm.

We also discussed arranging a meeting with Shaun who works at the bar to talk over what we need to include in the promotional material.

Jenny and Gina came up with the idea to use Youstream which would stream the event live on the internet so we could contact industry professionals in other cities and they could catch a bit of the event without having to journey to Leeds. We may not go ahead with the idea but its a very interesting proposal.

BRIEF 1 - Quill & Fox // invitations

I'm starting to draw inspiration for OTTO from lots of different types practices. These invitations are meant for a wedding and they're much different to your traditional invites. I like the ideas and the aesthetic to them. Much like what I have to do for PPD when contacting studios. It's going to be essential to do something creative as well as appropriate for the invitations to the launch party events.

BRIEF 2 - Thinking form // George Staehelin IS logo

Found this logo which could easily represent SO HOMME itself. It using the minimal shape and forms in the letters I and S to create the full logo. Not much else to comment on this project as all thats available is an image of the logo. Things like this interest me still, even without a background to a project the visuals speak to me and inspire me to try things.

BRIEF 5 - September Industry // El Camino Studio Helsinki

Great bit of embossing buy September industry. This is a great example of what I want to try for Found & Bound to try and cut down on the amount of printing. The aim is to spend as little as possible if not, nothing at all on this brief. I realise that I will need to purchase some things in order to create the logo. I'm looking into creative solutions to see if I can avoid any costs at all but to get a highly professional standard of work I may have to dip into my pocket.

BRIEF 2 // BRIEF 4 - Anagrama / MTLL

This branding project by Anagrama has intrigued me, with its minimal, type based logo. It use the space to make the eye work and creates an abstract visual on first glance, which relates to my experimental design direction for SO HOMME.

The notebook uses an interesting sting winding mechanism which could be incorporated into the SO HOMME logo if it was to be placed where the full stop is. An experimental idea which may not work as well as a simpler one but I'm going to try it.

Furthermore, the card board tube deliverable would make a great addition for Thierry's branded range as he could us it to carry different sized prints for exhibitions of his work and for general transportation.
The logo also has a great impact about it which Thierry has expressed he would like in his branding, although I'm taking a more 'to the point' approach to the design work for that brief.

BRIEF 5 - Art and Graft branding

September industry's really simple and inspiring branding for Art and Graft. This caught my eye for its use of a symbol as a logo instead of a typographic based identity. The briefs I've worked on so far have all been typographic with the identity and for the found and bound brief I'd like to look more at using a symbol to brand the products.

I'm particularly interested in using print a little as possible in this brief but still use print and craft as the bulk of the practice. This could be resolved through using rubber stamps instead of cartridge printers and wax seal stamps, possibly even exploring the uses of lettraset rub on fonts.

Another nice touch about this branding is that they found some old used postcards, some of which date back to 1901, and incorporated them in the design of the flyers and mail outs. This has made me think more about what I can use as a found material for making the books. There is much more than just the left over stock and scraps from others and my own briefs.

BRIEF 4 - Antisweden Fashion // Wanken blog

Interesting use of photography and typography to illustrate the different aspects of the fashion brands networking and publicity needs.

BRIEF 1 - OP carrier bag

I found a very simple carrier bag print on the designspiration blog page but the link to its original source doesn't seem to work anymore. Still, the design is very on brand for OTTO. Keeping the design crisp and clean will be the most effective way to get the vast amount of work done and once we have it all we can expand on it and develop it further.

BRIEF 2 - LookBook // Hellome-Umali

This is a repost from my Design Context blog for this brief. I began blogging my contextual findings before the Christmas break and now I'm shifting the content over to My FMP blog. The original blog posts were titled 'SS' for Shaun Somerville as at that point he hadn't decided to name the brand SO HOMME. I've retitled these reposts so they coincide with the rest of them that are specific to BRIEF 2.

I've been looking into the competitors and influences Shaun has left with me to research. There is some good stuff and the majority of it is very minimal which is something Shaun is going for. The creative challenge with being minimal is saying a lot with not very much.

Jil Sanders.

Raf Simons.
Very interesting and avant gard website. His approach is quite impactive and unconventional as well as minimal. The design work incorporates concept videos and music as well as the collections.

ACNE.

Comme Des Garçons.
Very unusual website for this one. The navigation is difficult to understand and its not very user friendly. It's more of an art compilation and mood site than an actual exhibition of fashion. From my understanding of fashion and through discussions with Shaun and Paul Luke I've learnt that there is more to fashion design than just creating clothes and designing them. It's a lot about aesthetics and trends which are influenced from a number of different things world wide. Trends are also predicted and foreseen based on sociology, economics, ecology, politics and psychology.

Dover Street Market.
This website actually has all of Comme Des Garçons collections.
